Playback singer Uma Ramanan dies in Chennai

Popular playback singer Uma Ramanan passed away in Chennai on Wednesday. She was 72.

She is survived by her husband A.V. Ramanan, who is also a singer, and her son, Vignesh Ramanan.

A trained classical singer, Uma Ramanan has been part of more than 6,000 concerts in over three decades.

The song ‘Poongathave Thaal Thiravai’ for the 1980 movie ‘Nizhalgal’ shot her to fame. She has been a frequent collaborator with Ilaiyaraaja.

Some of her popular songs with Ilaiyaraaja include ‘Aanandha Raagam’ from Panner Pushpangal, ‘Bhoopalam Isaikkum’ from the movie Thooral Ninnu Pochchu, ‘Aagaya Vennilave’ from Arangetra Velai and ‘Ponn Maanae’ from Oru Kaidhiyin Dairy.

Her last song was ‘Kannum Kannumthan Kalandaachu’ for the movie Thirupaachi, starring Vijay.
