Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Rathnam, The Beekeeper: OTT and theatre releases this week

From action thrillers to spine-chilling horror, this week we have an exciting array of movies and series to watch.


1. Rathnam 

Release date: April 26 

Action filmmaker Hari is back with a mass entertainer ‘Rathnam’ starring Vishal. The movie looks into how an MLA’s henchman tries to save a girl from being killed and the consequences he faces after the rescue. The movie boasts a stellar cast including Priya Bhavani, Samuthirakani, Yogi Babu and Gautham who makes a cameo appearance. ‘Rathnam’ promises to be an action-packed, fun film.

2. Late Night with the Devil 

Release date: April 26

A spine-chilling horror talk show that takes an unexpected turn of events. ‘Late Night with the Devil’ is a film shot in a mockumentary format, with visuals and narrations just like a documentary. The film revolves around a talk show that tries to boost its ratings by bringing in a possessed girl and attempting to speak with the devil himself. The interview creates havoc during the broadcasting, and their attempts to escape it. The movie is inspired by ‘The Don Lane Show’ and ‘The Exorcist’. The cast includes David Dastmalchian, Laura Gordon, Ian Bliss, Fayssal Bazzi, and Georgina Haig.

3. Challengers 

 Release date: April 26

The romantic sports drama is directed by Luca Guadagnino. The film follows Tashi Duncan, portrayed by Zendaya, a former tennis player who trains her husband Art, once a promising player, for a Grand Slam Championship. Art competes with Patrick, who was Tashi’s ex-boyfriend and his best friend. The triangular love story is all about love, loss, passion, and hard work. Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor play Art and Patrick. When asked about the training the cast had undergone for the film, Guadagnino said in an interview, “All three of the main cast spent three months working very hard”.

4. Pavi Caretaker 

Release date: April 26

Vineeth Kumar is back with his third directorial, ‘Pavi Caretaker’. The plot revolves around a residential flat caretaker Pavi, portrayed by Dileep, who leads a routine life with his own set of rules and how an unexpected bond is formed with someone new. The film promises to be a light-hearted comedy drama. Johnny Antony and Radhika Sarath Kumar also play pivotal roles in the film.

5. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire 

Release date: April 26

The fifth instalment of the Ghostbusters franchise is a sequel to the 2021 ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’. The movie opens as the Spengler family returns to the firehouse headquarters in New York City and how they face new paranormal threats. ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ brings back the original cast members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts. They join the team from ‘Afterlife’ including Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace.

Jason Statham’s ‘The Beekeeper’ is an action thriller that had its theatrical release in January. Statham plays a beekeeper and a member of a clandestine vigilante organization. ‘The Beekeeper’ is set to be a new franchise for Jason Statham. The movie had a great theatrical response.

2. Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story

Streaming platform: Disney+ Hotstar

Bon Jovi fans, assemble! This captivating docu-series is based on the journey of the iconic rock band Bon Jovi. The four-part series revolves around how they began, the challenges they faced, and their journey towards superstardom. The series has exclusive interviews with current and former band members. Directed by Gotham Chopra, the series promises to be a must watch for Bon Jovi fans.

3. Dead Boy Detectives 

Release date: April 25 

Streaming platform: Netflix

Based on the popular DC Comics characters Edwin Paine and Charles Rowland, ‘Dead Boy Detectives’ is a horror-comedy series. The story looks into two teenage ghosts who run their detective agency to help ghosts solve their mysteries. Starring George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri as Edwin and Charles, the supporting cast include Lukas Gage and Briana Cuoco.


4. Dil Dilemma Dosti, Season 1

Release date: April 25 

Streaming platform: Amazon Prime Video

Asmara, a young teenage girl who lives in Canada, is sent back to her Indian roots. Leading a chilled life in Canada, Asmara finds it difficult to cope with her Indian lifestyle. During her stay, she befriends a boy from the village. Their friendship blooms as they explore Asmara’s culture and home. The series is an adaptation of the book ‘Asmara’s Summer’ by Andaleeb Wajid.
